The fruits of faith and the Spirit are many, as enumerated by Paul in Galatians 5, and yet the chief of these fruits, according to 1 Corinthians 13, are love and hope. Love and faith a easy enough for Lutherans to distinguish, but what about faith and hope? Luther (AE 79:96), drawing on Romans 5, notes that hope is that fruit of faith which is squeezed out by suffering. Hope is the exercise of faith, the good work or enduring suffering with patience and trust. It is no surprise for Luther, then, to see faith, hope, and love so tightly connected everywhere in Paul, especially, e.g., in Col. 1:3-5 and 1 Thess. 1:2-3.
One could say that God gives faith, He enables love, but hope He must squeeze out of us.
