The immortality of the soul, far from being Greek sophistry, is taught by our Lord in clear words (Matt. 10:28): They cannot kill the soul. (Also Luke 16:22.) It is demonstrated by Him at the Transfiguration and His Revelation to St. John (e.g., 16:10). The soul is immortal, of course, not of itself as God is (1 Tim. 6:16) but because God wills the soul to be immortal and created it as such. The Sadducees denied not only the resurrection but also the continued existences of the soul (Acts 23:8). Our Lord Christ refutes both of these errors in noting that God is God of the living and that all are alive to God (Luke 20:38). Moreover, the arguments of St. Paul set forth in 1 Corinthians 15 only make sense on the assumption that the resurrection of the body and the immortality of the soul must be affirmed or denied together.
