Pieper notes that while the Gospel alone is the means of renewal and sanctification, “the Law serve the Gospel in promoting holiness” (3.18). He notes that a powerful illustration of this is Mark 9:42-48, where Christ uses the threats of the punishments of hell to urge us to apply extreme self-discipline (cut off the hand and foot, etc.). This is how to rightly apply the Law to the Christian’s fallen flesh. Well did Chrysostom draw on dominical example when he said: “Nothing is so useful as speaking about hell” (Chrysostom (on 2 Thess., hom. 3) quoted by Gerhard, on Hell (§ 88)).
